Rocket Lawyer Sells a Legal Department. Rhode Island Wants a Street Address.

Honest resident agent representation in Rhode Island for $99/year. Includes the address used on filings, same-day scanning of legal mail, and reminders for state deadlines.

Whose page is this? Ours. RI Registered Agent.org holds resident agent appointments in Rhode Island for $99 a year, and a reader who switches becomes our customer. The Rocket Lawyer numbers here are the ones Rocket Lawyer publishes, as of a July 2026 review, unedited.

Credit Where It Is Due: This Is Clean Pricing

Rocket Lawyer charges $125 a year for agent service and charges the same $125 at every membership tier. There is no introductory rate quietly waiting to expire, no upgrade path that changes the number, and no bundle arithmetic to unpick. In a market where several larger names run a low first year into a much higher second one, that discipline is worth saying out loud before anything critical follows.

The platform behind the price is real too. Document assembly, a deep template library, attorney consultations, the whole subscription. Agent service is one line item inside that catalog rather than the reason the catalog exists.

The Question Is Whether You Wanted the Catalog

Because what Rhode Island is asking for is small.

The state wants a resident agent, which is simply its own name for the role everyone else advertises as a registered agent, and it wants that agent reachable at a Rhode Island street address during ordinary hours. A post office box will not satisfy it. Eligibility is open in a way that surprises people: an individual living in Rhode Island qualifies, and so does a business entity of the usual kinds, provided it was organized here or holds authority to do business here. There is no examination, no license, and no premium version of the requirement that a bigger subscription unlocks.

So the honest test is about usage rather than price. Open your Rocket Lawyer account and count the documents you generated in the last twelve months, and the consultations you actually booked. If those numbers are healthy, stay put; you are getting value and the agent line rides along inside something you use. If the answer is zero, you are funding a legal department in order to receive mail, and mail receiving is available on its own.

A cheapest-in-the-state claim would be false here, so we will not make one. Ninety dollars exists in this market under BetterLegal's name. Ours sits in the low band and stays put, with same-day imaging included rather than invoiced separately.

Twenty dollars. That figure is not a company policy, it is statutory: R.I. Gen. Laws § 7-16-65(10) fixes the price for the statement an LLC files to change its resident agent. Fill in Form 642, file it with the Department of State's Business Services division, and pay the twenty dollars. Paper works, and so does the state's electronic filing route.

One precision worth having, because it trips people who go reading the fee schedule. That $20 belongs to the entity swapping one agent for another. There is a second, different filing, made on Form 642A, used when an agent is only correcting its own address while remaining the agent, and that one carries no fee. Different form, different situation, different price. If you are replacing Rocket Lawyer, yours is the $20 version.

Sequence, then. Sign up here, put our Rhode Island details on Form 642, file it and pay, confirm on your entity record that the resident agent line has changed hands, and cancel the Rocket Lawyer membership afterward. The reason to hold that order is that a membership and a public appointment are unrelated objects. Ending the subscription leaves the state's file exactly as it was, and the state's file is what determines where a summons goes and where the annual report reminder is posted each winter. Never create the window where neither company considers your mail their problem.

Twenty dollars is also, quietly, the healthiest fact in this comparison. It is what it costs to fire any provider in Rhode Island, ourselves included, which is why we price like a company that expects to be re-examined every spring.
